This is an ex-United Airlines LD3-type baggage pod, or “Unit Load Device” with forklift-accessible base,
designated as type LD3 (forklift loadable) by the “AKN” prefix on its identification banner. It measures
(per ULD Standards) 61 1/2″ at the base, increasing to 79″ to the left when facing it,
about 60 1/2″ in depth, and 64″ in height. It is made entirely of
aircraft aluminum except for the reinforced fabric “door”, which is
fabricated with enclosed flat spring forms to allow it to roll up on its
own. Two pin locks at the base are mounted with ring holds to allow
secure closure against the elements. Empty Weight (Tare) is 251 lbs.
A baggage pod, or unit load device (ULD),
is a container used to load luggage, freight, and mail on wide-body aircraft
and specific narrow-body aircraft. I bought this some years ago to serve as
a weather-tight storage unit on our pasture for feed, tools, and
miscellaneous items. It is extremely strong and could easily
accommodate a small garden tractor, mowers, and other implements or items to
be kept out of sun and inclement weather.
It is in overall very good to near-excellent shape, with the exception of a
small hole on one side caused by an errant forklift blade.
The hole can be easily patched if desired with a small piece of aluminum and
a few pop rivets. I have never seen one of these offered for sale
until I bought mine on e-Bay in 2000.
It might be incorporated into a trailer for portable use as
well.
