I have owned this old John Deere 40 for several years and have decided to sell because of other projects. It is still original in every way with the 6 volt system, full length rear axles, and original wide front with the front axle spaces still attached as the came frome the factory. Starts and runs excellent with no smoke, knocks, no engine, front axle, or housing cracks, and lift system works good. Engine runs cool and has no blow-by. Front tires have serious weather checking but the rears are excellent and I would say 99%. Tractor has rear weights but no front weights. Steering is tight. Both rear rims are good as are the front. Also has a very good tag!!! The down side of the tractor is it has transmission noises that need attention. Still goes in gear and can be moved on its own but far too much noise not to be considered serious. The up side is I bought another complete transmission that does have all the parts needed to repair the gears. I have pulled the shifter plate and examined the tractor transmission and from what I can tell the parts tranmission does have all the good gears that will be needed. This tractor would make an excellent restoration because it is straight ( couple of small grille dents but can be repaired easily) with no rust or serious sheet metal dents. The steering wheel is very restorable. It does need a seat bottom and back rest plus one side of the battery box cover My asking price is not dead firm but will not consider any low ball offers and ABSOLUTELY NO TRADES OF ANY KIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I paid for this tractor with GREEN CASH and that is what it takes to pay for it at pick up. My purchase price was $ 1750.00 plus bought the parts transmission for $ 350 and have the receipts to prove it. I’m not willing to take a tremendous loss but will consider offers. Also check the price of a new set of 11.2/10-34 rear tires and you see my tractor is priced fairly. I am retired and am available any time to come and inspect the tractor. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
